About me and my site
From a very early age I embraced order, every form of it. From putting things in order to giving orders: A place for everything and everything in its place. I have applied this mantra to everything in my life. It has turned out to be quite a double edged sword, which if not wielded properly can create discord. Not enough order obviously nurtures chaos and too much order creates neurotic behavior. My hope is that my advice will be somewhere in the middle, helping people to restore good, balanced order in their lives.
I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica in 1975. My mother, who is very artistic, was studying to be a pharmacist and my father a structural engineer. Due to their dynamic tree hugging lives I spent most of my time being raised by my grandmother, who was originally from Liverpool, England. She encouraged education and an appreciation for the arts. Thanks to her I have lived a very well rounded life.
After graduating Valedictorian of my class at the age of 15, I moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL and lived a very helter skelter life. I helped my mom take care of my siblings, I helped my siblings take care of their children, I helped my friends and boy friends to realize their dreams, and, in the midst of all of this, I managed to acquire an AA in liberal arts and a BS in Civil Engineering.
Through every step I knew I wanted children but somehow thought I couldn’t have them, so I bounced around the idea of adopting after I finished college. Well that turned out to be unnecessary when I got pregnant 6 months after graduating. Frustrated with my helter skelter life, I packed up all my belonging and my 6 month old son David and moved to San Jose, CA to be with my cousins.
Thanks to my cousins, I met my loving, supportive husband Miguel, soon got married and then had our second child, Elias. Upon getting pregnant with Elias, my emotions got the better of me and I left my trying job, which I would have put up with had I not been an emotional pregnant woman. This led me away from my love of engineering toward my unwavering love of life.
Just to be clear, the path was not easy or short. My husband and I went through trying times, which won him a place on a very high pedestal in my life. Who else would have put up with me? GOD knows, not I. That time has helped me to realize that I have to sort things into the important and not so important piles. It has also helped me to realize that being smarter and more organized about things creates less stress and produces better results.
Having an engineering background has helped me to be very methodical about getting things to work in my life, especially now that I am paying attention. And that is actually the first very important step, PAY ATTENTION. What works? What does not work? This will probably be the underlying tone for most, if not all, of my posts. I hope that through my tidbits, I can help you to engineer your life.
